London Furs Make Comeback

Fur in comeback among followers of fashion with chic new styles

Zhang Di, a 27-year-old policewoman, based in Heilongjiang, received her first wedding gift last month. Instead of a traditional present such as a gold jewelry piece, she was given a white, knee-length mink fur coat by her husband.

“Furs are a must-have for girls in Northeast China. It’s like Barbie or a luxury handbag in the United States. Wearing fur is a fantastic way to stay active and chic,” smiled Zhang.

Zhang and her husband are not wealthy enough to splash out the 20,000 yuan ($3,210) the coat cost regularly, but Zhang was pleased about this occasional show of extravagance.

“I need it to fight against the bitter winter here, which can reach minus 30 to minus 40 degrees Celsius,” said Zhang. “Also, wearing fur signals wealth, so it tells everyone I have a good life.”

“It’s not just women. Young men also like fur,” said Hu Bin, from Changchun, capital city of Northeast China’s Jilin province. “Look at the men wearing fur on the streets. Although most of them look like bears, they still love to show off. ”
As a result of the country’s rising demand, the level of fur production in Northeast China has been increasing steadily by 10 percent a year since 2004, industry experts said.

According to the International Fur Trade Federation, since 2011, China has become the world’s most significant fur production and consumption market. Last year, global fur sales reached a record high of $15 billion worldwide, from $14 billion in 2011.
The Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and South Korea are showing particularly significant gains, while in Europe and North America, turnover increased as pelt prices at auction reached record highs. Fur sales in Asia hit $5.3 billion, a year-on-year increase of 10 percent, which reflected a general trend in the luxury goods sector, said the London-based fur trade federation.

“China’s swelling fur demand is not only for expensive fur garments but also for trims on wool sweaters or cuffs on leather gloves,” said Mike Oaten, chief executive officer of the federation.

“During the week-long Spring Festival shopping spree, which fell on Jan 9, sales of furs up 30 percent,” said Zheng Zi, a fur garment seller in Zhejiang province. Her store provided a significant discount of 50 percent or even 80 percent off, but Zheng said expensive fur coats, which generally cost more than 20,000 yuan, are still affordable for most customers.

Industry experts said around ten years ago, most buyers in China were from neighboring Russia, where many people bulk up against the freezing winter by wearing fur. Now the number of Chinese fur lovers is significantly increasing.
“The fashion is leading the market. The combination of new techniques with trim and light fur and use of color is trendy on the catwalks. It has come together to create a real excitement in the market,” Oaten said.

In recent years, designers in New York, Milan, and London have increased their designs in fur, bringing it back into fashion.
Oaten added China has a different taste profile for fur. An increasing number of Chinese customers are fond of lighter colors and chic designs. Westerners tend to prefer brown or black with a classic design.

“People have developed a voracious appetite for the fur of all kinds, including mink, fox, rabbit, and raccoon,” said Zheng, a fur garment seller in Zhejiang province.
“In terms of color and style, pink, green, and white are very popular. Young customers tend to buy slim cuts rather than the old loose style,” Zheng added.

Zheng said even though sales have been increasing over the past years. People’s living standards have improved, the cost of fur has also risen because of the rising cost of the raw material and labor.
“The price of fur clothing kept climbing over the past several years with a year-on-year growth rate of 20 percent at least,” said Spark Fang, marketing executive of Saga furs, a Finland auction house.

Despite the rising cost and shrinking profit, Zheng is still optimistic about his business’s future outlook.
“Most buyers are white-collar workers. They want to own a piece for special occasions. I think their numbers will be expanding,” said Zheng.

In January, the 39th China Fur and Leather Products Fair held in Beijing. It attracted several European and American wholesalers looking for better commercial fashion garments and accessories. More than 300 fur companies attended the fair and filled the main exhibition halls.
“The mild winter and slow economy affected the sales of mink and other luxury London furs in Europe and North America. Sales in China have been growing, both for fur garments and fur accessories,” garment seller Zhao from Nanjing.

“There is no more dynamic, growing, exciting and successful country than China,” said Oaten. “Owing to rising incomes and urbanization, fur consumption in 250 Chinese second-tier cities will be strong in the next ten years.”

According to the China Leather Association, the Chinese bought 1.5 million fur coats in 2010, out of the 2.5 million sold worldwide. The country’s market for pelts expected to be worth 16.42 billion yuan by 2015.

“In the current economic climate, these figures are stunning,” said Oaten. “They show designers and customers are continuing their love affair with this beautiful, durable, and natural product. I am confident a stronger growth next year because prices at the most recent auctions are hitting record highs. Manufacturers prepared to pay a premium for quality because they invest in luxury for the long term.”

London furs are showing up all over the streets of Great Britain.

LONDON | Tue Feb 19, 2013

(Reuters) –

In Fashion

Fur and feathers in fashion, ruled the runway at London Fashion Week for autumn/winter 2013, liberally applied to cuffs and collars, hemlines and hoods to jazz up otherwise simple styles.

American designer Tom Ford pieced together heavy coats from snippets of dyed fur and long, mane-like bristles traced the spine and neckline of a sequined zebra print evening dress.

Eagle plumes topped the wide-brimmed hats of Issa London, while fur and feathers also adorned the block color coats and dresses of PPQ.

Clean, simple palettes of jet black, charcoal greys, creamy vanillas, and midnight blues paraded at Temperley London, Bora Aksu, and Zoe Jordan. At the same time, warm autumnal tones of caramel, ochre, brown-red and deep plums radiated at Issa London, Matthew Williamson, and Holly Fulton.

“There seems to be a real effortless simplicity around, very unfussy, unstructured easy chic going on, and the palettes are fresh – there are blacks and creams with a little bit of soft pink,” said Brix Smith-Start, stylist and TV presenter.

Global Furs

Although global growth worries still hover over the luxury market, designers focused on silks and other luxury fabrics to tempt consumers back into stores.

With buyers from 39 different countries attending, the British Fashion Council estimates orders of more than 100 million pounds are placed during London Fashion Week each season.

Designers also fused fur, wool, and leather, layering cotton with translucent rubber at Burberry, felt wool mixed with lace at Christopher Raeburn and feathers with sheer silks at Christopher Kane.

“It’s all about fabric and texture for next fall, with experimental surfaces and techniques like glazed knits, fused (not sewn) seams, and bonded fabrics, like leather bonded to neoprene,” said Sharon Graubard, fashion director of forecasting agency Stylesight.

“Luxury will pervade all, with furs, dense woolens, cashmeres, leathers — everything will be cozy and appealing to the touch,”

SEQUINS

Embellishment also looks set to become a key trend, with designers like Erdem, Julien Macdonald, and Peter Pilotto all adding a variety of floral applique and jeweled sequins to their collections.

Hemlines headed lower, with full flared skirts at Vivienne Westwood, Jonathan Saunders, Eudon Choi, and Topshop’s Unique label, paired with cropped sweaters and loose billowing shirts to create elegant and ladylike silhouettes.

“There has been a lot more demure clothing on the runways . Hemlines are slightly lower, the clothes are whispering, they’re not screaming,” said Sasha Wilkins, founder of fashion and lifestyle blog LibertyLondonGirl.

Androgynous tailoring seen at Paul Smith, Nicole Farhi, and Richard Nicoll with silk printed shirts, colorful patterned tunics, and tailored blazers and coats.

“I think next autumn/winter will be all about the coat. The ‘it’ coat has replaced the ‘it’ bag. It might be a big, boxy coat, a fabulous fur, a reshaped down jacket, or a new take on the duffel coat or the trench,” said Graubard.

As London Fashion Week draws to a close, all eyes will turn towards Milan as the next event on the calendar on Wednesday before the finale of the Paris season.

Fur is Back in Fashion with a Vengeance

Fur is Back in Fashion with a Vengeance: Will You Embrace It?

by Nora Crotty

Two Tone Brown and Black Mink Coat Puffed Collar exclusively from Marc Kaufman Furs’ collectionSupporters call it “natural” and “sustainable.” Opposers say it’s cruel and inhumane. But whichever side you fall on, there’s no denying that fur had a major presence on the fall 2013 runways this past month, being hailed as one of the biggest trends for next season.

Golden Sable Coat

Golden Sable Coat

Striped, dyed, embossed, and manipulated, the sheer amount of real animal fur we saw this fashion month was more overwhelming than we remembered from seasons past. We scoured through every single photo of every single collection that walked this season and found that a startling 70% of the designers who showed during fashion month used fur in at least one look. Several collections, including those by Altuzarra, Marc Jacobs, and Louis Vuitton, incorporated fur into over 20 looks. Others still, like J.Mendel, Marni, and Giambattista Valli, used fur in more than 30.

And then there was Fendi. Karl Lagerfeld apparently had some fuzzy vision happening while designing the Italian label’s fall line: Every single look from the 40+ piece collection featured multiple instances of fur usage, including (but certainly not limited to) coats, handbags, sunglasses, shoes, and even mohawk-esque hair pieces made of dyed fox. Needless to say, there were zero PETA pie-ings reported.

So is it safe to say that fur has finally fallen back into favor? Wearing fur has always been a hot button issue. Once considered the most regal and luxurious of materials, the animal rights movement first brought attention to the alleged wrongdoings of the fur trade in the late 1970s. In that same vein, the Internet age has beckoned an onslaught of viral anti-fur videos showing the horrific living (and dying) conditions of innocent animals skinned alive for their pelts–inspiring a new generation to think anti-fur. Veganism, more prevalent than ever amongst health-freaks and animals lovers alike (see: Anne Hathaway), promotes a lifestyle completely devoid of eating–or wearing–anything that once had a face. Not to mention the city of West Hollywood, California’s historic ban on the selling of fur products, slated to go into effect this September.

White Mink Coat Full Length

White Mink Coat Full Length

According to Keith Kaplan, executive director of the Fur Information Council of America, the case against fur is due mostly to a lack of education–and the fashion world is at the forefront of changing those misconceptions. “Designers have done their homework,” he told us via email. “They have come to recognize that the fur industry is committed to the humane and responsible treatment of animals and that no industry is more highly regulated at local, national, and international levels.”

Dyed Green Silver Fox Fur Vest, exclusively from Marc Kaufman Furs in NYCKaplan went on to describe fur as an eco-friendly option, calling it a “natural, renewable, biodegradable resource”–and thus a smarter choice than synthetic fur, which he says is petroleum-based, non-renewable, and manufactured in such a manner that “releases harmful chemicals into the atmosphere.”

Furthermore, “fur has a unique and unparalleled richness and texture that even the best of faux cannot replicate,” says Kaplan–which may explain why Marc Jacobs chose to show almost cartoon-like, stuffed animal-looking stoles for fall, made of very real animal fur.

Of course Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour has made no secret of her penchant for the real stuff and is often credited with introducing it back into fashion. Countless verbal and physical attacks from anti-fur protesters (including a raccoon carcass-bombing during dinner) haven’t dissuaded the first lady of fashion from using it in her editorials since she began her rein in the late ’80s.

But were the fall runways a sign of the fashion industry going green, or something more sinister? PETA‘s Danielle Katz told us that fur-friendly designers, such as Karl Lagerfeld, “use dead animals for shock value” and that, as far as the general public is concerned, “fur remains as popular as a cold sore.”

royal blue mink coat

royal blue mink coat

Katz could be on the right track about the latter. After all, it was our shock at the prevalence of fur at shows like Lagerfeld’s Fendi that lead us to investigate fur’s current social standing in the first place. As for the public’s opinion, is the general populace really looking for a tube of Abreva big enough to wipe out the fur industry–or is the fashion industry simply responding to society’s fever for fur?

We consulted data polling site Gallup.com for the cold, hard, fur facts. Gallup’s most recent survey on the subject, conducted in May 2012, asked participants whether they considered wearing fur morally acceptable. Of the 1024 people included, a resounding 60% saw fur as morally acceptable–a 4% increase from the same poll taken one year earlier. However, in 2012, only 35% believed fur to be morally wrong–a 4% decrease from the 39% who were totally anti-fur in 2011.

Dyed Blue Silver Fox exclusively from Marc Kaufman Furs in NYCThere are of course, as with any poll, various factors at play here, including the age, education, and income of the participants. But if these numbers say anything, it’s that fur’s approval rating has only increased in the past year–and the fashion industry, per usual, is totally in tune.

But what say you? Will you be clamoring for real-fur everything next season and turn your cheek at your house pets’ third cousins, or would you rather save the animals but potentially upset Mother Nature in doing so? Can there ever be a middle-ground when it comes to fur in fashion? We want to hear what you think.

New York luxury shopping NYC

New York luxury shopping for less best Places to Shop in NYC

New York luxury shopping for less

It’s still the world capital of luxury shopping – and with a little online homework, New York offers real bargains.

“Yes, madam, a lot of our British and Irish visitors say they are surprised at the price differences,” murmurs the subtly scented and suited old-school salesman.
I am peering into a glass-topped cabinet at a collection of diamond rings in Tiffany & Co, on Fifth Avenue. New York, having a Holly Golightly rapture moment. The shop is not only redolent – still – of the comforting glamour it exuded in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It is also much cheaper than the London branch.

The classic Tiffany engagement ring, for instance, costs $8,500 (£5,315) here. That’s £1,000 less than in London, where that same ring – as I know for sure, having recently been shopping with a friend who’s about to propose to a long-distance girlfriend – is £6,300.

The salesman is coy about providing exact London/New York comparisons, so, back at the hotel, pausing only to text my friend with the essential news, I go online to the Tiffany US and British websites. Amazing. The “Tiffany 1837” 18-carat cuff, £4,175 in London, costs $5,500 (£3,437) in New York. Jean Schlumberger platinum and diamond earrings, £2,050 in London, are $2,700 (£1,685) in New York; a 16-stone diamond and platinum ring that costs £5,500 in London is $7,250 (£4,531) in New York.

New York is still the World’s shopping HQ. None of its rivals offer anywhere near as comprehensive a range of delectable things at unbeatable prices. Milan is suitable for hard-edged high fashion, but only if you are not scared by spider-thin sales assistants who stalk around pointedly tidying the hangers behind anyone who dares browse. Paris has the World’s loveliest scents, cosmetics, and lingerie stores, but clothes-wise is hard if you are tall, since almost everything aimed at the shorter French person.

Bangkok is excellent for gems and Tokyo for futuristic beauty and electronic stuff, but they are a long way to go to the shop. Stockholm, Helsinki, and Copenhagen have the World’s best shops for calmly-designed homeware but are relatively dull for clothes.

What is especially satisfying about New York is that it is easy to compare prices online. Tiffany is far from being alone in operating a usefully informative website (www.tiffany.com). Department stores such as Bloomingdale’s, Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks all run sites that make it easy to see what’s in store and what everything costs.

Clothes make some of the best buys, of course, as long as you shop for American designers. This spring at Saks (www.saksfifthavenue.com), for instance, online research reveals that you will find the 7 For All Mankind “Josefina” boy-cut jeans that are £200 at Net-a-Porter for $198 (£123). The J Brand loose chinos that are £230 at Net-a-Porter are $216 (£135). At the old-world Ralph Lauren store on Madison Avenue (www.ralphlauren.com), the standard men’s polo shirt, £65 in Harrods, costs $75 (£47). Marc Kaufman Furs, New York’s Largest Fur Store (kaufmanfurs.com) And in Bloomingdale’s (www.bloomingdales.com), the famous Juicy Couture tracksuit, still a gym-goer’s staple, £190 at Harvey Nichols, costs $178 (£110).

Among accessories, a covetable Nancy Gonzalez crocodile bag that costs £2,200 at Harrods is $2,750 (£1,693) at Bergdorf’s (www.bergdorfgoodman.com). In Bloomingdale’s, Diane von Furstenberg’s “Dahlia” sandals that cost £195 at Net-a-Porter cost $195 (£121), and the sequined Fit Flops that are £50 in London, $60 (£37.50).

Designer silk scarves are 40 percent off regular prices in Century 21 (www.c21stores.com) American cosmetics and skincare brands such as MAC, Laura Mercier, Benefit, Philosophy, and Clinique are almost half the UK price at the 14 branches of cosmetics chain Sephora (www.sephora.com) At Bloomingdale’s, the file-style Trish McEvoy make-up bag, perfect for travel, and £55 at Selfridges, is $58 (£36).

Cameras, netbooks, laptops and other electronics are routinely 30 to 60 percent cheaper than at home at the ever-reliable.

Homewares are often less expensive, but not practical buys unless light or small. In Ralph Lauren’s home department, the crystal Bentley martini glasses that are £100 each in Harrods cost $125 (£78) each, while an “Overlap” picture frame, five inches by seven, £100 in Harrods, is $93 (£59). And there are some excellent deals on sports equipment. A golfer’s Callaway Big Bertha Diablo driver, for example, £239 in London sports stores, is $199.95 (£124) at World of Golf (www.theworldofgolf.com) Admittedly, though, that would be harder to take home than a neat little box from Tiffany.

My ring-buying friend, incidentally, has already booked a New York weekend for himself and his girlfriend – effectively free.

The best times are March-June and October-December – neither oppressively hot nor bitterly cold.

Where to stay
Five minutes’ walk from Tiffany, Saks, and Bergdorf Goodman, The New York Palace (00 1 212 888 7000, www.dorchestercollection.com) have views of the Empire State building from the higher floors. In the Renaissance Gilt, it has the city’s most beautiful dining room – plus an executive lounge for breakfast and day-long free snacks, drinks, and computer use. Doubles start at £246, a spectacular triplex at £927. Downtown, Thompson Hotels’ Smyth (00 1 212 587 7000) is the closest to J&R and Century 21; doubles from £151.

The relaxed new LES (00 1 212 460 5300), also from Thompson, is handily located near the cutting-edge boutiques of the Lower East Side; doubles from £215. (www.thompsonhotels.com)
Where to eat
As soon as you fix flights, book a table for dinner at the new Crosby Street Hotel (00 1 212 226 6400, www.firmdale.com), currently one of the liveliest scenes in the city. Alternatively, try the thoroughly American Standard Grill (00 1 212 645 4100, www.standardhotels.com) at The Standard Hotel in the heart of the Meatpacking District.
Getting around. luxury shopping, best part of NYC. The essential bus and subway fare is $2.50. A multi-trip MetroCard is useful, bought from any subway station. However, nothing beats bouncing over the potholes and steam vents in a yellow cab.

Virgin Atlantic (08448 747 747, www.virginatlantic.com) flies to NYC five times a day, from £361 economy to £2,047 Upper Class.

Marc Kaufman Furs NY Beyonce Eye Spy Under All That Fur?

Is That Beyonce Under All That Fur

Beyonce, who recently sassed up the covers of W and Dazed & Confused, is taking a surprisingly shy approach to modeling in her shoot with Vogue Italia. The singer is practically hidden from the camera in dark mysterious poses while wrapped in luscious furs. Normally known for showing off her bootylicious bod, it’s actually nice to see her mixing things up and looking artistic up for a change. Although, when we do get to see her face it’s hardly visible and she doesn’t even look like herself. Hmm…Could this be a new trend in celeb photography?

Photographed by Francesco Carrozzini, I found myself gazing at the hair whippin’ contrast between the two photos shown here. Her moves would even make Willow Smith proud!
